“Luk” is the god of wealth and is associated with the bestowal of fortune by heavenly officials. Da Hong Pao, on the other hand, is a special variety of Chinese tea primarily grown in the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian Province. It belongs to the category of oolong tea and is revered as a famous tea due to its rich orchid aroma, long-lasting fragrance, and distinct “rock charm.” Regular consumption of Da Hong Pao not only refreshes the mind and relieves fatigue but also promotes salivation, diuresis, heat relief, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, detoxification, aids digestion, and prevents greasiness. It is also believed to have anti-cancer, cholesterol-lowering, and anti-aging properties.
According to legend, the origins of Da Hong Pao date back to 1385 during the 18th year of the Ming Dynasty’s Hongwu reign. A scholar named Ding Xian was on his way to the capital for the imperial examination and fell seriously ill with severe abdominal pain while passing through the Wuyi Mountains. Fortunately, he encountered a monk at the Tianxin Yongle Temple who brewed tea from his stored tea leaves and offered it to him. Miraculously, the pain subsided. After Ding Xian achieved the top honors in the examination, he returned to express gratitude to the monk and inquired about the origin of the tea leaves. The monk pointed to a large red robe and draped it around the tea bushes, hence giving it the name “Da Hong Pao.” The top-ranking scholar then brought back a jar of Da Hong Pao tea with him to the capital.
Upon his return to the court, the emperor’s consort fell ill with an incurable ailment. When all the doctors failed to cure her, Ding Xian presented the jar of tea leaves. After consuming the tea, the empress gradually recovered her health. Delighted, the emperor granted Ding Xian a red robe, instructed him to personally go to the Nine Dragon Nest (Kē) and drape it over the tea bushes as a gesture of gratitude to the dragon and stationed guards to oversee the tea leaves, ensuring none were secretly kept. Since then, the Wuyi Rock tea Da Hong Pao became a tribute tea exclusively enjoyed by the royal family, and its reputation spread among the people. It is said that every year, officials sent by the court would wear a red robe and hang it on the tea bushes, hence the name Da Hong Pao.
Da Hong Pao contains three beneficial components: tea polyphenols, tea polysaccharides, and theanine. It has good effects such as anti-cancer, cholesterol reduction, memory enhancement, and blood pressure lowering.
In today’s society, with high work pressure and imbalanced diet, issues like blood pressure, blood lipids, fatigue, and cancer have become common workplace concerns. Hopes that through the medium of tea, and the high-quality Da Hong Pao, tea drinkers can enhance their mental and physical well-being, leading to increased alertness, sharp senses, agile thinking, and improved work efficiency. They can effortlessly handle their work, enjoy continuous financial fortune, and embrace abundance.
“Luk” Aged Da Hong Pao Tea is another masterpiece from Mr. Wong, who once monopolized the Wuyi Rock tea market in Hong Kong. Wuyi Rock tea has a sweet and mellow taste with a rich and fragrant “rock bone floral aroma.” After brewing, its aroma and flavor provide a comfortable and pleasant experience. The fragrance lingers in the mouth for a long time after sipping. Even after 7 to 8 infusions, the aroma remains undiminished, and the taste is still sweet.
Aged Da Hong Pao has an even more mellow flavor that brings a sense of tranquility and relaxation, enabling individuals to cope with the ever-changing society and excel in the workplace. As the saying goes, “Only a few teas are truly exceptional,” which reflects the rarity and excellence of Wuyi tea, always cherished by scholars, officials, and social elites.
